Description

A plug-in OBD II code reader for working out why a vehicle's engine warning light is on. It reads generic and manufacturer-specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and lets you clear the check engine light once the fault is dealt with. It suits both professional technicians and home mechanics.

The reader has no battery and takes its power from the vehicle's diagnostic socket as soon as it's plugged in. It works with OBD II compliant petrol vehicles from 1996 onwards and diesel vehicles from 2004 onwards, including CAN systems. As well as reading codes, it shows malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) status, checks emission readiness, and retrieves the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on 2002 and newer vehicles that support 'mode 9'. A detailed user manual covering generic diagnostic codes and operating instructions comes in the box.

Check compatibility before buying: the vehicle must have a 16-pin DLC (Data Link Connector), and its Vehicle Emission Control Information Label must state that it is OBD II compliant. The reader cannot be used on motorcycles or hybrid and electric vehicles. It does not read airbag or braking system codes. OBD II readers only read emissions and engine management codes in 99.9% of OBD II compliant vehicles.
